Computer freezes with sound loop while playing games

I have recently been having a rather frustrating problem with my newly built computer. While playing games (i.e. Rome II: Total War or Borderlands: the Pre-sequel) my computer randomly freezes and the audio repeats in less than a half second interval. I am unable to get to the desktop and require a hard reset. This happens only when playing games and is completely random; it may freeze 10 minutes in or 3 hours in.

My specifications:
- ASUS Maximus VII Hero (Z97 chipset)
- Intel core i7-4790K Quad-core (4.0 GHz)
- Windows 7 (64 bit)
- EVGA GTX 970 SSC
- Crucial MX100 512 GB 6 GB/s SSD
- Kingston HyperX Fury Red (2x4 GB) 8GB DDR3 1866 GHz RAM
- Corsair AX860 Platinum Power Supply

I first did a little troubleshooting. I ensured that all my drivers were installed correctly. They appear to be and that had no effect. I then reformatted my SSD and started from scratch. That had no effect. To ensure that I was not using a faulty SSD, I formatted another hard drive and tried to run and play on that. My games still froze randomly. To rule out the RAM, I replaced the RAM with another set of 8 GB. My games still froze. Before I had my graphics card, I tried running those games on low settings and my computer froze, which I thought at the time was just the motherboard's integrated graphics being unable to run those games.

I ran a Heaven benchmark and the temp was roughly 55-75 deg C on highest settings.

By my estimation, that leaves either the motherboard, processor, power supply, a heating problem, some hardware incompatibility or a software issue. Unfortunately, I am incredibly ignorant when it comes to computers. Any advice you can provide me would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know any information you would like me to provide.

I RMAed my motherboard and will check to see how that worked. I also noticed that I didn't have much thermal compound on my CPU so I applied some more. I will update in a couple days to let you know if I am still experiencing this issue.

So the problem hasn't appeared since I got my motherboard back in the last few days. Therefore, the problem was one of two things: the small amount of thermal compound on my CPU or my motherboard. I probably should have tried to see if the freezing still occurred without adding the thermal compound. I am still skeptical as to call this solved though.

in that case i thing the problem was the motherboard because if I'm not mistaken the pc does not freezes with that sound loop when it gets hot, it just restarts.
