SSD performance is too slow

I just installed a new SSD and the performance is much lower than I expected, about 176 MB/s read/write speed. I was hoping for something in the range of 300-480 MB/s

My motherboard has only SATA 2 connectors. So I purchased a SATA 3 controller card and connected it to the SSD. The card is plugged into an expansion slot PCIe x1 v2.0.

I have all the latest drivers installed.
My Bios does not have an AHCI option (too old?).

Do you have any suggestions?

More details of my system:
SSD: Crucial M500 240GB (CT240M500SSD1, New) connected to SATA 3 controller card (IO Crest, PCIe, model SY-PEX40039, displayed as Asmedia 106x SATA Controller, New) in expansion slot PCIe x1 v2.0
OS: Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 (all important updates installed)
CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9600 / 2.30 GHz
Motherboard: Gateway MCP61PM-GM Motherboard 4006254R, Part Number: 4006254R, Model:FX7020
Bios: Phoenix Technologies v6.00 PG (12/14/2007)

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

You didn't tell how you measured the speeds, so it's hard to comment. Read and write speed should be different for example, but you give only a single value.

If you run a specific benchmark and post the whole result here then someone might be able to give a verdict. Try this one for example: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html

The auther specifies that some anti-virus softwares should be turned off while benchmarking. You should try that in any case and see if you get better results.

I used AS SSD Benchmark. First is SSD connected to SATA 3 controller card. Second is SSD connected to SATA 2 on motherboard. Antivirus software is turned off. Strange that SSD on SATA 2 is faster than on SATA 3.
SATA3: http://
SATA2: http://

Make sure you install the drivers that came with your SATA3 card, as they are more fine-tuned for your card than the generic Microsoft drivers. If your add-in card has it's own BIOS that runs during bootup, you may be able to activate AHCI mode on the card itself. Finally, you could change your main BIOS from IDE to RAID mode (activate RAID mode, but don't setup any RAID profiles). RAID mode activates many of the AHCI capabilities on older SATA motherboards that don't offer an AHCI option.
