My okd computers cpu/mobo died on me and i cant access the files on my HDD. all my stuff for the past several years is on it. im building a new comp and if i instal that old hdd on my new comp, will the OS (vista) in my hdd conflict with the OS (win7) in my new build? what steps do i need to take to retrieve my files (i understand programs will need to be downloaded again).

There will be no problem in get the files from you old HD unless your new build does not support IDE drives and your old HD is a IDE drive.

If your old HD is a IDE drive read this link for a solution http://www.pcper.com/reviews/Storage/Kingwin-EZ-Clone-USB-30-HDDSSD-Clone-Adapter-Review
Note: most new motherboards no longer support IDE.

If your old HD is a SATA drive, just buy a new HD, install all software on it, then power down the computer and install your old HD into it and retrieve the files you need.
You should be able to tell it in the bios to specifically boot to the new Win7 drive. But I understand the paranoia.

But if your at all concerned about something getting fouled up in the process you could always pick up an external encloser for the old drive and turn it in to a USB drive. Something like this would likely do the trick.

As long as the old drive is still a good drive you could also use this for a backup. You know, in case your CPU/Mobo die on you. Not that that ever happens. :)
