Hello, MOB777!

I'm really sorry to hear about your WD Passport.
Have you tried to get the drive recognized on another computer or with a different USB cable?
Have you tried to access the drive through Disk or Device management in Windows? Can you see it anywhere?
How to access Disk management: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/disk-management-windows-7.htm
How to access Device manager: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/driverssupport/f/access-device-manager.htm

If you do, I'd suggest to test the drive using Data LifeGuard Diagnostics: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/940/

Keep me posted with the results!

I have the same problem but have found no solution. I have since given up, though. I just thought I'd point out that it is not a backup if the files are only one drive even if it's an external one. ;-)

Hey there, olavinto!

You are right, it's not a backup if it's your only copy of the data! That's why we recommend backing up your files to several different locations on different storage devices.
I'm sorry to hear about your problem with the WD My Passport though :(. Can you please tell me more about the issue? What troubleshooting steps have you taken?
Have you tried testing the drive using WD Data LifeGuard diagnostics utility? It will let you know what's the drive's health and SMART status. Here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=SMMzk0

Thanks for you reply.

My problem appeared while doing a firmware update. It failed (for no obvious reason) and the drive was detected only as "Initio Default Controller" and nothing else (the drive itself was not recognized). I tried pretty much everything: tested on two sytems (XP and 10 Preview), tried to update the firmware again (drive is not detected) and Googled the problem (how I got here). I came to the conclusion that the failed update broke the controllers firmware and it couldn't access the drive anymore.

I just decided to do some some more searching and I was able to restore the drive by applying this firmware. After that it updated to the latest firmware from WD's site and is working fine again!

My drive is a Passport Elite 320 GB (WDBAAC3200ACH) by the way.

Also the link to download the "Virtual CD (VCD) Manager for Windows" on your support site is broken. :)
