I apologise up front for not having much experience in this dept. I want to set up a wireless network at home, basically for photos, music and videos, I have talktalk fibre optic internet so speed should be ok I think. I have checked out a lot of options and think I will go for a synology 214 play. A few questions regarding this, are they normally plugged into the router via an Ethernet cable.
How does videos and music play on a smart tv from one of the hard drives in the rack? where is the software, do I need to load software ?. What is RAID and would I need this?, if I had 2 hard drives in the rack, would 1 be for a back up or not.
Any help / guidance would be appreciated.

Solution
I'd want the Synology plugged in. It probably only plugs in.
WiFi is inherently undependable, so I would want a pivotal device like that plugged in.

RAID Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives
Some say Independent, but the inventor says Inexpensive

Depending on the kind of RAID, yes you have a backup.

Except for RAID0 AKA scarey RAID.
RAID0 used 2 or more drives in parallel to speed thing up.
If one drive is lost, ALL data is lost.
