Upgrading Graphics Card From Nvidia 630

Hi all, first post on here :D. I was thinking about upgrading my current graphics card (MSI Nvidia Geforce GT630), to something more powerful. My price range would up to about £270, and I'd like to keep my card as an nvidia. Any suggestions? I use my computer for semi-serious gaming so a decent amount of dedicated RAM (my current card has 2GB) is preferred. Also, would changing the card be as simple as taking out the old one and putting in the new one? and would it fit in my tower if the ports were in different places to my current graphics card?

Hi,
So first thing is to upgrade that PSU and then the GPU. The existing PSU will not be enough to support any discrete GPU.

PSU - This should cost around £66. EVGA = excellent PSU.

For a GPU- R9 270x

To find out if the GPU will fit, you should measure the inside of the case, or pull up the manufacturer's website, maybe they list 'maximum gpu length'. It may also be in the manual.

Hi and welcome.

First- we need more info.

What kind of computer is it?

For £270 there are a lot of options. What website do you prefer to buy from? What country?

If you know anything else about your system please include it, such as power supply unit and processor.

All graphics cards have the same PCI-E connectors, so they will fit.
The ports on the back may be in different locations, but all ATX cases are roughly the same standard.

Within the UK, and somewhere reputable that I can trust
I have a zoostorm desktop PC and my specs are as follows:
Windows 8.1
Processor - Intel i3 3240 @3.4 GHz
RAM - 8GB
Motherboard - Gigabyte technology H61M-DS2 DVI
As for power supply I presumed the "total output shall not exceed" is the number you are asking for? Which was 250W

there is plenty of space rearwards for the graphics card, the only thing i am concerned about is the "width" of the card. Is the metal output side with the HDMI, VGA etc. always the same size? Another thing i forgot to mention, will the graphics card you recommended be able to support 1080p gaming? I know it wouldn't be at max settings, but would I get a decent FPS for games such as Payday 2?

Hi,
Yes the width of the card (metal bracket) is universal to ATX standards.

The R9 270x can do 1080p. Not ultra though. It will give you good FPS at med/high on 1080p.

That R9 270x recommendation was based on the budget you listed. You can always throw more money at the GPU... a 280x will be excellent, as well as a GTX 970... But you will pay more for higher performance.

The PSU is a must.

Thankyou for all the help! One last question, when I was watching some installation videos, there were connecting wires to the card that aren't present on my current one, what are these and do I need to buy something extra for them?

No problem.

One thing. Earlier I said:
"Yes the width of the card (metal bracket) is universal to ATX standards."
This is true, however there is a 1/2 size card as well. Known as LOW PROFILE. If this is the current GPU, then you are fine:

Your current PSU doesn't have it because it cannot support the 270x.

You should not buy any new GPU without first upgrading the PSU. Once you upgrade the PSU it will have the cables for the PCI-E card.
