i use AMD Overdrive for overclocking my fx-6100, i have had it stable @3.8/stock voltage(1.3375 CPU VID) for awhile now. it never goes below the 20 degree thermal margin according to AOD, using stock cooler. i tried 4.0 first at stock voltage and ran a benchmark (PassMark) and it worked fine at 100% and even completed the benchmark. i tried 3.9 before than and the same thing occurred. After running benchmarks i figured i would run AOD stability test and within a minute or 2 the system crashed with it at 4.0, so i tried bumping voltage to 1.375 and the same thing happening. So i put it back on 3.9/stock voltage and it lasted about 5 minutes before it crashed. the cooling seems fine on AOD so i don't think that is the issue, is 3.8 my limit for this chip? i would rather not fry my cpu trying to bump voltage up too much.

my specs are:

Mobo: GA-78LMT-S2
cpu: fx-6100
Ram: 8gb kingston hyperx black
GPU: evga gtx 750 ti ftw
PSU: S12II 520 Bronze

Well, I have an 8120 that's a very similar chip. I was able to do 4.2 at stock settting but your mileage may vary. North of 4.0 though you may also need to apply a little voltage to the NB and suych. Here's an article:

I just really wanted to hit 4.0 and that's all, I'll get another cpu before I go crazy with the overclocking, so what would cause it to crash the system if it wasn't reaching it's thermal limit?

I have found the AOD stability test to somewhat useful, but I'd trust prime 95 for a true stability test. Why? Not sure but I'd say don't put too much stock in that particular test. The real test is that it doesn't crash during gaming or other system intensive uses.

Don't know about you, but I don't run benchmarks all day long. Useful for dialing in setting for sure, but practical use is what its all about.

I ran that 8120 at 4.4 Ghz for awhile, but now it is in my wife's PC just running at stock settings. Still going strong.

This rig is strictly for gaming and multimedia purposes, no rendering or anything but multiple tabs up while running a game such as skyrim (most intense game I own other than poe and d3) with mods. It runs the game fine at full 1080p, i guess I won't be too worried about pushing the cpu farther, benchmarks only showed slight gains over my 3.8
