Please forgive me for asking what may be a duplicate question, but I have scoured the forums and have read through all of the relevant posts and still can't quite figure out what I'm doing.

I want to extend my wireless range so that I can connect upstairs on the opposite side of my house. Right now, the signal is very weak with just one router set up. I have been using the Netgear N600 WNDR3700v2, and I have just purchased a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk. I want to use the new R7000 as the primary router and set the N600 as a wireless repeater.

I want to connect them wirelessly, as opposed to running an ethernet cord through the attic (or however I'd have to do it to wire the two.)

I have configured the R7000, no prob.

To set the N600 as a wireless repeater, I have tried a couple of different things, and now I've just reset it to the factory default to start over because I wasn't sure it was correct... and I could no longer access it via routerlogin.net or the IP address.

I turned off the R7000 and connected the N600 in order to do the firmware upgrade, but I did not change any of the default settings.

I won't muddy the waters with the configs I've tried unless that would be helpful.

I'm confused, specifically, about:
(1) Do I use the wireless repeater option in the N600 settings, or do I just disable DHCP, set a static IP address, and then [insert remaining steps here]?
(2) Is the N600's 5G SSID meant to be the same as the R7000's 5G SSID?

Can anyone point me to a comprehensive set of instructions to complete this setup? If not, can any of you wireless networking gurus help me learn?

PS - I only know enough to be a little dangerous... In fact, I am not even totally sure if my 2.4G and 5G SSIDs on each router are supposed to be the same.

Thank you in advance!
Mindy
