Hi All,

These forums are awesome and have helped advise on my computer build last Summer.

Recently I've experienced a problem where my computer won't power off when I hibernate it or shut it down. I first noticed this when trying to hibernate my system. I have the power button set to hibernate, but when pressing it or shutting down the system the screens go dark with an idle orange LED on rather than the usual blue LED when active. While the monitors go idle, the system fans are audibly spinning and the power LED remains on.

System:
Windows 8.1 Professional
ASRock Z77 Extreme 3
i5 3570K
2 x 4Gb Kingston Hyper X 1600Mhz
XFX Pro 650 W 80+ Bronze
500 Gb Samsung 840 EVO (System Drive)
WD Blue 1 TB (Storage)

I upgraded to the EVO in July and did a clean Windows 8 install so my OS is relatively new and uncluttered.

This issue began this week. I think the onset of this problem has something to do with two times the system suspiciously powered itself off out of the blue, which happened recently (less than a week ago). I'm not sure why this happened, I was playing Path of Exile and had a decent amount of processes in the background. My theory is that the power draw may have spiked (although I have done this activity a ton of times in the past) and the system shut itself off but may have been damaged in the process. One power bar is powering the system, two monitors, a lamp and a 42 inch LCD TV (though I'm not sure if the TV was on at the time). Also, I had the task manager open before one of the shut downs and the system was pushing over 80% RAM usage. I'm wondering if perhaps the RAM topping out could have caused the shut downs.

I've read the following two Forum posts about people having this issue:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/375996-31-power-shut-down
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1916724/shut-power.html

Someone said that if you don't have any errors in the Event Log on shutdown then its a hardware problem. I don't see any clear errors in the Event Log related to shutdown but I found the logged errors from the two unexpected shutdowns earlier this week.

Shutdown 1

Shutdown 2

After the shutdowns these DistributedCOM errors started showing up in the Event Log in pairs. The same two server ID's are in each pair.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated, as I am worried about the possibility of hardware failure and want to take all measures to find out what I can do to fix the problem.

Sorry for such a long post,
Thanks!
