Hi all.

I have a 1 TB WD Sata 2 HD on a external USB 3.0 box and a few weeks ago my Windows 7 stopped beeing able to acess it, when I looked further I found out that the former NTFS partition was now on RAW format.

After a lot of research I tried to use TestDisk 7 to solve the problem. I followed a guide to restore the files and tried to copy them to another HD, the file structure it's intact, I can see all drectories and files but when I start the operation, after a while I keep getting I/O errors and when it ends I only get around 30% of the original files....

According with the program the boot sector file (and backup) are ok, and so are both MFTs files...but I get a 'mismatch MFT error' and TestDisk advises me to run CHKDSK (it was the first thing i've done when I found out the problem, doesn't work, stops after a while).

My question is...how can I repair the MFT so I can get my files restored? I don't even know wich MFT is the correct one....the original or the backup? From what I've read the problem can be solved but I don't have enough knowledgement about HDs geometry to figure it out, so I hope somenoe can help me....

Thx in advance!

Hey there, Mike 80!

I'm sorry to hear about your WD external HDD. Unfortunately, running chkdsk might further the damage in these cases. :(
You could try the suggestions from this community thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1896053/corrupt-master-file-table-bad-sectors.html I think here you will find the knowledge needed to solve the issue yourself somehow.
If your drive is still under warranty, I'd suggest to contact our tech support either by e-mail or by phone, explain the issue and RMA the external. Also you can check out the data recovery partners we work with:

Thx SuperSoph_WD, I'll check out that thread.

The WD HD was originally on a My Book 3.0 external drive but it was damaged after an 'pulling accident' with the USB cable that damaged the port, I tried to send it to repair but I was told that the connections were too damaged and the simplest (and cheaper) solution was to buy a USB box for SATA drives and retrieve the WD HD from the original case...wich I did (I was really satisfied with the My Book unit, it was a shame what happened)....

Anyway, I've got lots of data there that I really need to recover and I'm still feeling puzzled how the heck both MFTs can be absent of errors but still don't match...it's a real mistery for me! (but I have my suspicious cause the problems began a while after I used an Acronis Suite, I found some similar complains on the web when I googled for a solution...but I'm really not shure).

But well, let's see what can be done...I just hope it isn't some kind of physical error! (in the past I've had that kind of troubles with Seagate IDE drives, but never with a WD unit).

Once again, thx m8! ;)

Hi again, Mike 80!

Glad you are satisfied with our products. It's rather unfortunate that you get this bad experience with the MFT mismatch though. :(
It's really not a common issue and I don't think it's due to any physical damage on the drive itself.
If it all started when you installed Acronis Suite, I'd suggest to check their community and see if you will find your answers there.
I found a thread that might be useful to you though. You will find different solutions for a corrupted MFT: https://forum.acronis.com/forum/3121

Hope it helps. :)
