OS on a SSD, programs on another... what am I doing wrong?

I have built a box and I decided to use a SSD as a main boot drive. (in this case will be listed as C:) and then I have a terabyte HDD used to store and run most of my programs off of (from this part forward shall be referred to as F:) Things where going good till F: took down my whole system. I am not sure if it was a virus or just a poorly installed program but the whole drive (F:) is down. I have taking it out of the box and it is running good so far. My Question is a.) this should be able to be done successfully without having to get a new drive in 6 months b.) something I am not doing right? and if I install all the critical programs on the C: drive won't it wear out the SSD faster? I have a lot of questions about this setup... but I will focus on these three for right now.

No need to worry about wearing out your SSD. Many actual tests like those done by Tech Reports shows that current SSDs can handle hundreds of terabytes of writes before wearing out. That is a level never reached by 99.99% of non-commercial users.

Just don't fill it over 90% to give it some extra space for garbage collection and TRIM to work so that your performance doesn't suffer. And one nice thing about SSDs is that their performance can be renewed with a secure erase.
