Hi All,

My MSI Radeon R9 270X GPU is hitting 106 degrees while playing games. It sits at around 45-50 when idle. My CPU does not go above 40 degrees while playing games.

My PC has frozen a few times recently whilst gaming. I get an off colour white screen with thin vertical lines. Is the over-heating issue with my GPU or my system?

Thanks

Your GPU is definitely overheating, and the reason your computer is freezing is because your GPU is shutting down to try to prevent damage. Odds are your GPU's heatsink isn't making proper contact with the GPU, and that's causing it to overheat while under load. The other possibility is there is something wrong with the cooler itself, or the fans aren't working at all. If your GPU is still under warranty, I would recommend starting the RMA process. Alternatively, unmount the cooler, clean off the GPU, and reapply thermal paste and try remounting the cooler to see if that fixes your temperature issues. Doing so will likely void your warranty though, so that might not be the best idea if you still have warranty support.

All I can say is...

All I can say is good luck, and I hope you have better luck with MSI's RMA department than I have. Every card I got from their RMA department has died within 6 months to a year, and the final one I got from them had thermal issues initially due to the crappy job they did at applying thermal paste and mounting the cooler, forcing me to repaste the card myself.

Cheers Supernova,

Yeah. I had a MSI Gaming 7 mobo that fried itself (3 months old) not long ago and was forced to buy a new one. I think i will just get a new GPU but I am not sure if it is wise to go down the MSI route again. I may try the XFX R9 280X though I am not sure how compatible it will be with a MSI motherboard.
