Problems clonining/installing Win 8.1 in SSD

Hi there,

I just got a new laptop (Acer v3-572g) along with a Samung SDD 240 EVO 120GB capacity. I'm trying to clone the Windows 8.1 x64 into the SSD (wich is installed in the optical empty drive) but I'm always getting error in the process.
I've already tried the Samsung Migration software, Paragon Disk Manager (which is told to be the best) and Partition Wizard Mini Tool. No succes, always getting I/O errors in the process.

So I tried to do a clean install. I have a bootable usb with Win 8.1 and when I get to the screen where you select installation partition, it won't let me install Windows in the SSD, showing 0x80300024 error. Seems Windows detects the HDD as primary and active and won't let me install it in other drive.

The thing is I can't phisically remove the HDD to install the SO in the SSD. I've read some info on how to open this laptop, but there are no detailed instructions and from the few I've read, it's quite difficult (this model does not have an easily reachable HDD compartment like other models. You have to unmount all the covers VERY carefully).

I'm out of ideas, any help is welcome.

Solution

A fresh install on the SSD will be the best thing to do, but in order to do it right you have to unplug the HDD. Otherwise, the OS might become confused. Afterwards. make sure the SSD remains the first hard drive to boot from in the BIOS...
Hey there, NexusRoy!

What about your disk partitions? Did Windows format the drive when you tried to install it?
It's true, you might fix the issue by swapping or re-plugging the SATA cables inside, but I wouldn't recommend opening the laptop.
You said it's a new one, so my suggestion would be to return it to the retailer you bought it from and ask for replacement. Otherwise, opening the laptop yourself will void its warranty and you most probably wouldn't want that.
You can also get in touch with your laptop manufacturer's tech support for assistance. It seems like your laptop might be defective, so I'd RMA it and get a working replacement instead.

Hope this helps. :)

I don't think the laptop is defective, in fact it runs pretty well, for a 5400 rpm HDD ofc, but I want to use my SSD. Seems the system is blocking any attempt to clone or to reinstall the system in a different drive.

The only thing that comes to my mind now is to set the primary HDD partition as secondary in the Windows installation prompt (with DISKPART) and set my SSD as the only active and primary. But I'm afraid this can turn things even bad, since I've never attempted this operation before.

If there's no way to unplug the HDD, you can leave it there but might encounter some OS confusion later. Just make sure the SATA cables are swapped and SSD is in the primary port on the mobo.
Your laptop may not be defective, but un-mounting it will void the warranty (at least that's the policy with most of them). So be careful, I personally would just return it and say what the problem is, so that they'd fix it for me without voiding the warranty.

Good luck! :)

After many, many tries, I'm afraid the only solution is to open the laptop, no matter if warranty voids. But I don't feel capable to to that, I might bring it to a tech and see if he/she is able to open the cases, as seem it need a lot of pressure to open it.

Thanks for the answers.

Good luck, NexusRoy!
Hope you fix your issue. I'm glad I was able to help out even a little! :)

I did this with an Acer As8950G but the difference is that laptop has 2 HD/SSD bays. The problem is the second bay didn't have standard SATA connector but there was a SATA cable available and I purchased that. I cloned the HD then inserted the SSD to drive bay 1 and it booted. I then moved the HD to the 2nd bay and it works great. I used Acronis true Image with an external USB drive case. I did it a second time when I got a bigger SSD and it worked that time also.
