So my friend has a Gigabyte Z97P-D3 and hes trying to connect a new WD Black hard drive but the bios is not recognizing it and windows setup shows "We couldn't find any drives" in the Diskpart it doesn't not show the hard drive.
The hard drive is working.
I suspect a motherboard issue, but what do you think?
(all the parts are new)

Solution
Hey there, tomkis90!

I'm really sorry to hear about your issue with your WD Black. :(
@qazzi suggested some pretty good troubleshooting steps to figure out where the problem was.
Another thing you could try is updating the BIOS and see if it will get the HDD detected.
You mentioned you tried the laptop HDD. Did you try with the SATA cable from the laptop or the one you use with the WD Black?
I'd suggest to try the WD Black with a different SATA cable, if you haven't done that already.
If all of these don't work, since the WD Black is a new one, I would recommend your friend to contact our tech support either by phone or by e-mail and let them know about the issue.

He does not own another PC.
He has a laptop but the HDD won't fit and the laptop is really tricky to take apart. ( need to remove the keyboard and the screen )
The hard drive seems to be making some silent noises and vibrating a bit, so it is working.

don't you have any other friends that have a pc? that you can test the HD with? and why take apart the laptop? you just need and external case ( USB one) plug it in there to test it. but from what you said "it's not being detected in the BIOS probable PCB damage to the HDD.

The next thing to do is RMA the WD Black and get a replacement:

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the response.
Sent the old hard drive back and got a new one today, its working just fine now.
It probably got damaged on the way because of how the amazon is packing the hard drives with out any protection what so ever.

Hi again, tomkis90!

Yes, it really does happen so that sometimes the HDD gets damaged during the shipping. I'm glad things worked out for you though and you've RMA-ed your product successfully! :)
Happy computing using your new drive! :bounce:
