let's try this again...
cable co installs new ubee modem... spends two hours trying to get the dlink dir-655 router to be recognized (worked fine with old modem). I pull out my old linksys router, hook it up the same way and IT WORKS FINE. Hook up the dlink... no internet connection, no network, try to go into config (which is the same as the ubee, and get the ubee, and it is locked), no gateway...

now what?

a 169.?.?.? is generally a loop back address to the nic card. have you tried to do a factory reset on the router (holding the reset button in for 30-60 seconds) and have you made sure the firmware is up to date, if not you could download by being connected to modem directly and then on the dl-link choose the update file from whereever you downloaded it too

well, generally the 169 is a loopback address from the nic card in the pc/laptop when it cannot connect to the router/modem.

have you checked you ip4v settings on the ethernet adaptor? it should be set to obtain automatically when connected to the router except if you set a static ip

OK, got it fixed. The Ubee and DLink both use 192.168.0.1 for the setup address. I plugged the DLink connection (not the internet port) into the computer net port and was able to then disconnect the Ubee and get into the DLink setup page. I changed the router setup address to something other than 192.168.0.1 and saved it. Then i connected the Ubee to the DLink router and everything worked fine.
