Ok so i am currently installing windows on an old Pentium 4 machine with a p4 631 1gb ram and an old laptop hard drive. I already tried installing it before and it just stuck at completing installation so after half an hour i restarted the machine and tried yet again to install windows, and yet again it gets stuck at completing installation. I have left it on to see if anything happens, is this happening due to a problem or is it just taking its time.

Solution

1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) -- just for the OS, not applications or data files
DirectX 9 graphics processor with Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.0 or higher...
try installing ubuntu linux . It that does not work you may have a hardware problem . Possibly the hard drive .

And yes more recent versions of windows will struggle , but you should have about the same compute power as a recent intel Atom and they managed to run Win 7 on netbooks

Internet access

The WDDM is not required, but it if you want the Aero Glass effect it is needed.

How many MHz or GHz is the Pentium? That may be the problem, also, I've had 32bit in a VM before and it only had 512 MB of ram, even though it says 1 GB for 32bit....strange.
