My recommendation would be to remove your old hard drive and install a 2.5" 256GB Solid State Drive(with recent price drops it will be quite cheap). Backup your data and then remove the back panel of the laptop unscrew everything that needs to be unscrewed and pop that SSD in there. Then install Windows 7,8 or 8.1 and you're set. You're definitely gonna notice a big improvement in read/write speeds and lower boot times. That is if you plan to keep your laptop for a longer period of time. If you plan to sell or bin it there's no need to change anything right now

Do you happen to know if the Samsung ssd (840) is compatible for lenovo x201?

Well it depends if the motherboard on your laptop supports a 2.5" drive and it does so any 2.5" HDD or SSD would be. Just keep in mind that at the time of manufacture of your laptop the motherboards didn't support SATA III 6Gps interface so your SSD(even if it supports SATA 3 6GBps transfer speeds) will probably be running at SATA II 3 GBps so you won't be making use of the faster transfer speeds offered by the SATA 3 interface. Also get the cheaper SSD you can find. The 840 is quite expensive I believe. Go for a Kingston HyperX Fury, Sandisk Ultra II or Crucial MX100. Hope I helped ;)
