So my desktop died recently and i bought a laptop instead of building a new desktop as i may have to go abroad soon. Never used to monitor temperatures on desktop too much as it had alot of fans and a liquid cooled cpu. But gaming on this lap which has a 4th gen i7 hyperthreaded , 12gigs of ram and a gtx 870m im able to game fine. Like say in battlefield 3, i can easily do around 80 fps but in a few minutes gpu and cpu temp's both are above 80 degrees celsius. Just bothers me that the fans kicked in so much and temp's already at that point within minutes. Is this going to shorten the life span of my laptop. Should i tone down graphics settings to medium or high even thought im doing fine in the fps department?

no it will be completely fine. i assure you. my laptop i recently sold had a core i7 3630qm and would get up close to 90 while playing games. but a look on intel's ARK website shows that the max recommended temp for that particular cpu is 105c, whereas an i7 4790k desktop cpu, based on their website, has a 74c-ish limit. the cooling systems in laptops are far and away much less capable than your average desktop cooling options, but most manufacturers these days have learned how to work within their limits quite well.

yes those temperatures are fine for a laptop. intel mobile cpus have a higher threshold for heat than their desktop counterparts. if youre going to be gaming on it, expect the fans to kick on to full blast pretty much. even a few minutes of gaming is going to give you peak temperatures. it doesnt usually rise gradually. keep an eye on the gpu temps, but 80s is pretty normal for a laptop

so gaming for say, 2 hours at 80 degree temps will not harm it?
