So what I'd like to know is what the difference between the Gigabyte ga-z97x-sli and Gigabyte ga-z97x-gaming 3 is. The prices are really similar and I'm looking to buy a gigabyte motherboard around that price range.

My appoligies, I glanced over it, and my brain was thinking AMD 970 chipset instead of intel x97 chipset.

The gaming one has additional x16 slot (x4 speed) for trippple crossfire, a higher end network controller, and their "game controller" software for tweaking hotkeys and mouse precision.

Both have m2 port, sata express, same higher end audio controller, same opt fan header for water pump cooler, same circuit protections,

Dude, I know what SLI means and BOTH motherboards are SLI capable, so far the only difference I found between them is that the gaming one can support RAM of up to 3200 MHz modules while the other one only goes as far as 3000 MHz modules.

Thanks, that was more helpful.

Apart from supporting slightly faster RAM, as you've mentioned...

The Gaming-3 variant will support 3-Way Crossfire setups of up to 3 AMD Graphics Cards. It will only support 2-Way SLI the same as the SLI variant. Note that when using 3-Way Crossfire all other PCI-E slots become unavailable. That just leaves the one PCI slot for expansion cards such an Network Interface Card or 3rd Party Sound Card. The SLI variant also includes 2 PCI expansion slots.

The SLI variant also has a Side-Speaker Out Audio Jack not present on the Gaming variant.

Apart from those differences the boards are almost identical.

To summarise: Get the Gaming variant if you want a 3-Way Crossfire setup and/or demand DDR3 3200 RAM. Otherwise the SLI variant is much more adaptable as a Motherboard for situations where you want multiple peripherals installed in the PCI-E x4 and PCI slots.
