Deleted Operating System

I recently downloaded a virus onto my laptop. While I was restoring it to the factory settings, it shut down. When I turned it back on, the screen was black and it read "MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM". Is there any way of putting the operating system back on without purchasing it? I cannot access anything on the laptop.

Solution

Not entirely, if you formatted the drive or done a factory restore it just marks the currently available files/folders/etc as space that can be written over as needed. So if for instance you had family photos or other important documents on there that you didn't have backed up you could likely restore them.

Did you buy this laptop new? If so, what version of Windows 7 came with it? There should be a sticker on the bottom somewhere with a key. You can get a Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft, but you can't use it for more than 30 days without a valid license key.

I purchased the laptop as new about 4 years ago.I'm not absolutely sure what version of Windows 7 it is.

The laptop did not come with a disk, and I don't have the ability to check if it is still available.

Is there a sticker anywhere on the laptop with the version and license key?

There is a sticker on the bottom with multiple codes on it and a product key.

Great. That sticker should also list the version of Windows 7 you have. Is it Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate?

I have the type and speed. Beside type, it says AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics.
I'm not sure if that is useful but that is all I have.

That's exactly what I needed to know. At this point what we're going to do is burn a copy of Windows 7 onto a blank disc, and use it to put an operating system back on your laptop. For this, you'll need a different computer to work with, which I'm assuming you have access to seeing as you're posting here. I'm going to write this as if you're using a Windows 7 computer. This computer will need a DVD drive to write DVDs with. You will also need a blank DVD.

Step 1: Go here. This is a download for the Windows 7 Home Premium x64 ISO file. This is going to take a while to download. Depending on your internet speed, I would anticipate a couple of hours at least.
Step 2: Put your blank DVD into the DVD drive. Go to your Downloads folder. The path should be C:\Users\[Your User Name]\Downloads. Double click on the ISO file you just downloaded. It's called X17-58997.iso. Click Burn to burn the disc.
Step 3: Take your new Windows disc and put it into your laptop. When you turn it on, look for a message that tells you which button to press to bring up the boot menu. It's usually F12, F10, or ESC, but it might be different for you. If you miss it, don't worry; just restart and try again. Once you have your boot menu up, go ahead and select your DVD drive. If you don't know which option is your DVD drive, post the options here and I'll let you know what you need to choose. Once you've selected your DVD drive, a message may come up saying "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." Press any key. You should be able to go through Windows setup at this point. Let me know if you run into any issues.

If you have the product key for re-activating it with MS, you can download Win7 here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
It will be an .ISO file that you will use to burn a DVD that will be the exact same as the one you would have gotten with a new PC. Use it to re-install Win7.

Lol... Napking is way ahead of me.

No problem. Let me know how this goes, and take note that we're not done after this. There are still programs, drivers, and updates to install.

I will inform you when I have finished the process.
