CPU Usage High when running Elgato Game Capture HD/OBS (Still need help please)

What could be the problem with this?

I'm running Game Capture HD (a capture card program for my ElGato Game Capture) I also run into this issue running Open Broadcast Software (a Twitch live streaming program)

for whatever reason this has become a recent issue. The high CPU Usage causes the program to lag/become choppy/slow. I thought maybe originally it was the RAM and I was going to go out and buy some more ram, but I have 8GB of Ram and the Physical Memory% is always around 20-25% when running the program, the CPU usage is the only thing that seems to go up.

My CPU Build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wqkp99

I have my own GPU too, but I recently fixed an issue with it, do I have to maybe restart my PC in order for this GPU to take effect on the programs or should it be automatic?

Should I buy more RAM, even though logically 8GB of ram should easily be enough for that program.

I've ran the program before with no issues at all..

I've ran numerous scans on my PC, virus scans, memory diagnostics, etc, all come up clean as well. I also reformatted my PC about a week ago as well.

Any idea what is causing this issue?

edit: Still having this issue, I've tried updating the drivers and everything.

If you open task manager while this occurs, what is taking up the most CPU cycles in Processes tab?

What are your CPU temperatures like? If the cooler isn't seated right, the CPU will throttle down to avoid damage. I've always liked HWMonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html).
If you stress the CPU and it doesn't throttle up to 3.7 Ghz, it may indicate an issue.

I'm not sure familiar with the particular capture software Game Capture software, but the site http://help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/1020255-what-system-requirements-does-my-computer-need-to-use-elgato-game-capture-hd- says you need a minimum of 4GB. So eight is probably good.

CPU Temps are sitting at:
SYSTIN 30 degrees C
CPUTIN 65 degrees C
AUXTIN 48 degrees C
TMPIN3 85 degrees C

GPU Temp is:
TMPIN0 40 degrees C

Not sure where I can see the GHz, I don't seem to see it on HW Monitor.

The GameCapture is the one eating it up. It spikes up to 100% CPU Usage and causes the PC to slow down, etc. I can't even have other programs open, its the only way to even manage the spikes of usage. But like I said, I've used this program before and never had any issues. I thought it might be the RAM, but I thought CPU Usage =/= RAM, and since the physical memory for the most part stays at a low number, I didn't think it was the RAM either.

Yeah I tried. I just don't know why its happening considering nothings changed since I've used the program in the past.
I'm thinking of maybe changing the USB 2.0 its hooked up to, to a USB 3.0, I doubt it will help but it could be that. But I've had it hooked up to USB 2.0 all along.

Anyways, it seems to also happen when using my livestreaming software which also uses the same ElGato hardware, but different software.

well, i have not use gamecapture before. how about you remove that (even just to see if it solves the issue) and/or find a replacement for it, an alternative.
also, maybe you can check their forums for some solution regarding the cpu spike you are having

Bumping, still having this issue a few weeks later. The CPU usage just starts spiking anytime I use this software. I thought maybe it was the programs drivers but I've updated them. My CPU specs surpass the required ones for the program as well. I've tried setting the affinity to half my cores(as the program only requires 2) but that doesn't seem to help either.

I really just don't understand what the issue is at this point at all. I use 2 programs that use the Elgato Hardware itself, OBS(Open Broadcast Software) for streaming my gaming on Twitch.tv and I use the Game Capture HD both cause CPU spikes. It only spikes when I'm directly previews the 'capturing screen' on my PC, if I turn off the preview(not possible when streaming though) it seems to calm the CPU down.

This only started happening since I reformatted my PC, which theoretically should've sped up my PC/cleaned the crap out of it, and unfortunately its slowed this stuff down.

FIXED IT. For those who may be having this issue, it seemed like the issue was that I was using a USB 3.0 Slot instead of a USB 2.0 Slot, I switched it and now the CPU Usage barely hits 20% and everything runs smoothly again, YES!

I, too, have a very similar set-up as you (8 GB RAM, 3.60 GHz Processor, 1TB HDD, Windows 7 Ultimate w/ Activation Key Not Valid system error message, Desktop Computer Motherboard, and it has a few USB 2.0 & USB 3.0 port(s) onboard with it, too).

I tried my Elgato Game Capture HD60's Mini-USB to USB cord in the USB 2.0 port on my Desktop PC, as well as in the USB 3.0 port, same system configurations each time, just 2.0 or 3.0 being the only factor worth mentioning here, that could be responsible for changes (if any) in the Desktop's CPU usage, when tried in each port, seperately.

No noticeable difference. 2.0 and 3.0 both had my exports from about 2 hrs. worth of Start-and-Stop back to back recording(s) in 'Game Capture HD (64-bit)'.

Additionally, I will mention that like others have mentioned resulting in 'Task Manager' (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC), under 'Processes' Tab, 98% of CPU on my computer machine is being used by GameCapture.exe Application Process. Total Memory used by this process when I checked, was 1,759,584 K , or also known as just 98% of my system's available CPU.

USB 3.0 to 2.0 downgrade/swap didn't work for me, so is there something you think you may have additionally changed somewhere as well maybe?? It's easy for all of us to overlook or glance over little things that we did or did not possibly notice doing at the time, but little things make the biggest differences sometimes!

You mentioned something about re-imaging your version of Windows, right? Is this something you did while trying some of your troubleshooting steps you did, to get your Elgato Game Capture more reasonably within its CPU bounds, so as to prevent over-usage and computer slowdowns from the Elgato Program running on your PC?

Anything you can provide as a helpful hint, or just some further insight into the matter, would be greatly appreciated on my end, I feel helpless with this issue at this point to be honest :( Elgato's FAQ's are not so in-depth, if you catch my drift...

I was having this very same problem when running elgato hd software. So, I checked the thermal paste on the cpu and noticed that it needed replacing. So, I put some new thermal paste on and my cpu went from 100% load when running the elgato hd software to 60%-70% the most. So, if your having this problem check your thermal paste.
