I'm sorry to hear about your WD Elements.
You say that you see it when you plug it in (in My Computer, I assume). Can you see it in Disk Management and/or Device Manager in Windows and share what is the status of the drive there?
If you can see the drive letter assigned to your external, go to the Start menu > Open "run" > Type in "cmd" > Then type the command "chkdsk x: /r" (where x - is your WD Elements' drive letter).
It might take some time, but it will locate and fix any bad sectors on the drive.
Hopefully this will give you access to the data, so that you can back it up. Then I'd recommend to check if the HDD is still under warranty, so that you can RMA it
