Hey, kobe22kobe!

I'm sorry to hear about your WD Elements. :( You say that you see it when you plug it in (in My Computer, I assume). Can you see it in Disk Management and/or Device Manager in Windows and share what is the status of the drive there?
If you can see the drive letter assigned to your external, go to the Start menu > Open "run" > Type in "cmd" > Then type the command "chkdsk x: /r" (where x - is your WD Elements' drive letter).
It might take some time, but it will locate and fix any bad sectors on the drive.
Hopefully this will give you access to the data, so that you can back it up. Then I'd recommend to check if the HDD is still under warranty, so that you can RMA it http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8

Keep us posted though. Hope this helps. :)

Hi again, kobe22kobe!

Unfortunately, it seems like your external WD Elements is failing. :(
However, there's one last thing you could try explained here:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/250364-32-solution-disk-read-error-occurred
You could also try it with another computer and see if you could at least access long enough to backup your data.
But I'd recommend to contact our tech support and RMA your drive. If it's still under warranty you might be able to get a replacement.
Contacts: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en
RMA: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8

Good luck! I hope this helps!

Your PC might have problems with its USB controller drivers. You can try connecting your external drive to another known working PC to find out if you can access your data from another system without problems. Thus, it will enable you to backup you files to avoid possible data loss.

Sorry, Kobe! :( This must be pretty unpleasant!

Check if you have the latest firmware update on your WD Elements.
http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=306&lang=en
If it is outdated, it can reflect the performance of your drive on the computers.

Maybe if this doesn't help, I'd strongly recommend to contact our tech support. I'm sure they will be much more useful and help you figure out what is the problem with the external.

Keep us posted! Good luck! :)
