VGA monitor problem using port

Hi,

Here is my issue. I have a xfx r9 280x

I just got a new benq 144hz monitor that will only work in the port on the left (see picture)
However it seems like my second old screen that is VGA will only work in that port as well.

With an adapter I plug in the VGA monitor in the port on the right (see picture bellow) but it doesn't work.

I love to have the 144hz when I play games, but when me and my gf work we like to have both screens... big dilemma.

Anyone can think of a solution? I'm out of ideas.

Can't you connect the main monitor to the HDMI port and then the 2nd to the working DVI port?

XFX Specs:
Output - DL-DVI-I : 1
Output - HDMI : 1
Output - mini DP : 2
Output - SL-DVI-D : 1

The DVI-D only carries digital signal. So I don't think your analog monitor will be able to use this port. I believe you will need a DVI-D to VGA converter.

there is a VGA port on the mother board, would it be wise to use it?

I missed that part! This card has a display port 1.2 as well. Have you tried getting a 1.2 cable for this setup?

the second monitor is VGA only

here is the adaptor I am using. Could it be the adaptor that is wrong?

Yes using the onboard VGA would be a good solution, IF it actually works. Not all motherboards support using the onboard when you also have a separate gfx card.

Otherwise a HDMI to VGA converter might work for you. I bought a very cheap one off ebay for ~$10, and image quality is perfect.

Get a Displayport to DVI-D cable to run your 144Hz monitor,

The DVI-D is the big end of the cable picture I linked. It is the end that will connect to your 144Hz monitor. The other end goes into the Displayport of your graphics card.

The DVI-I port is the black colored DVI port on your card, that you said is working. Have your old monitor plugged into that port the way you had it before.

Thank you for your help, but I have no idea where I can plug the cable you suggested in that link. One port would fit, but the other port on that picture wouldn't fit anywhere. It doesn't look like an HDMI cable or any port my GPU has.

The problem is if I plug in my VGA screen in the black port, the benq 144 doesn't work in the red port.

Ok so I looked up your card and it has mini-Displayport connectors.

In that case you would need this active conversion cable instead:

As well as an ordinary DVI cable to connect the large end to your monitor.

The mini-Displayport is capable of 144Hz output. Active conversion isn't going to reduce it.

pluging it in the motherboard didn't work. I'll try to find a vga to hdmi cable!
