Windows 8 won't let me do a factory reset

No doubt this problem has been reported and answered numerous times before, but I'm stuck and no help I've sought, even here, has been what I needed. I'm running an HP 2000 with 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 GB HDD that came with Windows 8 already installed as the default OS, and my problem is that after downloading some updates that Microsoft themselves said I should have, everything began running slow and not loading properly.

I've tried so many things to fix this problem, from system restores and manually uninstalling and hiding updates from after the last update I know things still worked properly, only to have the computer install every single update anyway, to refreshing and factory resets to try again, but we come now to my problem. This computer won't refresh or reset, thus the problems I'm having with websites and the computer itself not cooperating remain. No matter what method I employ to tell it to refresh or reset, it gets started and I see it says Preparing for about a minute before the screen goes completely black and does nothing, forcing me to do a hard shutdown, and when I turn it back on, I get an error message telling me there was a problem and the task could not be completed. I know that's wrong because I've done a factory reset before, and while it took a few hours, the process was always displayed on screen, except when the computer needed to restart itself to continue the process.

This has me confused and annoyed because I know there's a problem, but I don't know what specifically it is, and none of the help I've sought, be it from Microsoft, HP, or forums like this have been the solution.

Have you tried doing the actualy HP recovery instead of the Windows 8 Refresh/Restore? Usually on newer HP's if you hit F11 at POST it will go into the HP recovery program.

Okay, that made sound like an idiot. Had to Google POST in relation to computers and the internet. Anyway, tried it, screen still goes black and the computer still does nothing.
