Hey! I'm planning on building a gaming PC. I want to know if its safe to purchase used parts. What parts do you guys think is safe to purchase used and how do I make sure they are not damaged?

Solution
Yes the upcoming broadwell chips will be compatible with H97 and Z97 boards. You could also try and save some money buying used ram or even a used monitor. The pentium g3258 is a very capable part, especially as it can be overclocked

You always have to be careful with used parts. I would never buy used storage devices like a HD. RAM, motherboards, CPUs and GPUs should be fairly safe. You have to be careful because some GPUs may have been used for mining and have been running 24/7 for a good period of time. Ask the sellers if they overclocked CPUs as well, which can reduce lifespan. Besides that you're really relying on the honesty of the seller.

It's always a gamble. You're probably OK with RAM but I'd steer clear of motherboards and HDD's for sure. You won't know if a graphics card has been used (abused) in a coin mine so I'd also worry about that too.

how much do you have to spend?

I think most parts are safe to buy. I wouldn't recommend buying a second hand psu or hdd but everything else should be fine. Try to find pics of the things you will be buying, and contact the seller before purchasing... and if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Buying used parts is always a "crap shoot'. The reasoning is that depending on where you buy from (a store s the guy down the street) you don't know the condition of the parts you are purchasing. If buying from a store is the part from a "Demo" model that has just been on in the background or is it a return package that they are reselling? If it is from a person you know, how long have they had it and what type of usage/overclocking have they done?

Bottom line is most used parts will not carry any type of warranty and many manufacturer warranties are not always transferable from one person to the next. Some businesses may offer like a limited 90 day warranty, but to be honest these are fairly useless. Simply put when buying used parts there are no guarantees on what you are going to get. You don't know if the part has any intermittent issues and such.

Personally I would rarely buy a tonne of components used. I might be persuaded to buy a higher end video card under the right circumstances, for example, person just bought a GTX 770 and the new GTX 970 came out and they want to upgrade and are giving you a really good deal on the 770. I think you would be better suited buying a pre-built computer with full warranty or buying your parts new but selecting lower end items.

In the end it is up to you, but as the old axioms go, "you get what you pay for" and "buyer beware".
Good luck!

Good pictures (preferably of it running), a valid reason for selling it, and it can be pretty safe. There are lots of people out there who feel the need for the latest and greatest at all times and try to sell while the value is still high to maximize their return.

I wish that was true. But 650$ is more like 450$ because of the price difference. PC components are overpriced in India :(.

It's not terrible but the GPU is the absolute minimum for playing at 1080p. Also, it doesn't say what PSU is in it but if it's iBall like the case you'd want to replace it for something better.

This is a build I put together on FlipKart. It's a bit better than the used one you linked to (better GPU, better PSU, newer Haswell i5) and all the parts are new. It comes to 46428INR but I bet if you shop around you can find some parts cheaper on other sites.

Its a good build but I need a monitor too. So that's well over the budget. But I'll settle for a pentium dual core now n upgrade later to an i5. Do u think the next gen i5 would be compatible with 1150 socket?
