Does EVGA GTX 970 has heat pipes?

Hi,

I am about to purchase GTX 970 from EVGA as I believe EVGA makes best and life long cards. I am about to buy this one:

http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=04G-P4-0974-KR

I would like to know that whether this card has heat pipes like ASUS Strix

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-STRIX-GTX970-DC20C-4GD5-Graphics-Cards/dp/B00NJ9BJ8G/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1414692526&sr=8-14&keywords=evga+gtx970

I believe they are useful to absorb heat spilled from the card while processing, correct me if I am wrong?

The OP linked directly to the 04G-P4-0974-KR. That specific model is definitely ACX 1.0.

The model with the ACX 2.0 cooler is 04G-P4-2974-KR

bit-tech.net ACX 2.0 review shows only two of the direct touch heatpipes making contact with the GPU:

The difference between the ACX 1.0 and ACX 2.0 coolers is with the fin spacing and the use of better quieter...

yes it uses heatpipes

i mean of course they are designed differently than than the asus strix, but all gtx 970 have relativly the same cooling performance so your not missing out on anything. except that the asus strix actually turn the fans off under certain temperature because the architect is so effiicient that it does need to be actively cooled.

In the pictures i can't see them, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they are not there.

What would be the issue if it doesn't have them?

The GTX 970 is a quite cool GPU, it really doesn't need them. Unless you're planning to do OC.

So you meant that ASUS is better than EVGA?

asus isn't necessarily "better" per se, the performance of both companies unit is pretty much the same. just that asus implemented a feature, based on their testing of the card, that they figured out it doesn't require active cooling below a certain temperature which results in a quieter system since the fans dont come on at all. so it's better in that sense but just because they thought of a unique feature that is pretty compelling. the other will cool just fine and be fairly quiet below maybe 50% fan speed. so you prolly wont hear it anyway.

and you can kind of see the heatpipes in the picture i think they are chrome colored if you scroll down in the link i used where they show the card without the shroud they are behind the grill. i think there are 4. they serve the same purpose

there really is no reason to worry, using heatpipes on graphics cards has been standard for the last 2 or 3 generations maybe? yeah they are definitely there for sure. they wouldn't be able to cool very well without them hehe

Only applies to the ACX cooler, ACX 2.0 has a large heatspreader on the bottom. Or so I thought, that doesn't look like the pictures of the other ACX 2.0 coolers I have seen. 970 and 980 should have the same PCB layout...

Looks like there might be two versions of the ACX 2.0 out there.

The difference between the ACX 1.0 and ACX 2.0 coolers is with the fin spacing and the use of better quieter, lower power fans on the ACX 2.0. The block is located in the same position on both ACX cooler revisions.
