No, they are compatible. Fx6300 can work under the F1 version BIOS. Here is the cpu support list. http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=4717

Hi Guys,
Just on the same topic, I'm not sure how to decipher the BIOS for GigaByte. I have a GA-970-D3 mobo currently running an AMD phenom II 960T with F4 BIOS. Will I be able to upgrade the CPU to an FX 8370E (or something similar) without updating my BIOS?

You need update the BIOS to F13b for the FX 8370E. Check the cpu support list ( all rev version 1.0/1.1, 1.4, 3.0) http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4306#dl
Using the old cpu (960T) update the BIOS then change the cpu to fx8370e.
