So I ran out of pcie cables with my psu cx600. The gpu came with some adaptors however they don't seem to be working. What do I do? I just build my pc about 2 weeks ago so the psu is still pretty new. Is it virtually useless now because of the second gpu?

That is pushing it to the very limits. If you were able to do it you would not have a lot of head room. If you are overclocking at all or have several hard drives or SSDs then I would say no.
Does the 600 even have two sets of PCI power adapters?

If you are going to SLI THOSE two cards, go with at least 750.
The newer 970s it may be possible to SLI two of those on 600 since their power consumption is far lower but then you wouldn't have a lot of room to over clock, and why would you buy a 970 if you weren't going to over clock it :)

Most Cards of that style takes 200-350 w of power alone. In fact Nvidia suggests to run ONE it SUGGESTS 500w to run it safely with your other components. The specs say it can run at 170w of power but if you are running two even at those specs you are using 340 which doesn't give you a lot of room (260w) left for the rest.

I only have one hard drive running with my setup. I just figured out that it might be a dead gpu. I put my pcie cables to the new card and my computer said to put the cables in but i already did. So am assuming its just a dead gpu. The fans seem to work though. How often are gpu dead on arrival?

some of those adapters are REALLY flaky, very poor QC. even if theyre good an adapter introduces another possible point of electrical failure. makes more sense to expect trouble regardless using an adapter more-so than the alternative.

whatre the system specs and budget

yes i notice that but I used the pcie cables that I was using on the first graphic card and it didnt recognize the second gpu. So it has to be the gpu right?
