Hey guys working on my first pc build and i will be playing skyrim with a lot of mods, would like to stay under 300. Now not sure how much vram ill need 2gb 3 or 4 some research told me 2 gb lags woth alot of mods. I would like to stay with an nvidia card. Ram is 8 gb. My cpu is an i5 4690k. What gpu would you guys recommend for me?

Solution
If you are going to mod Skyrim (as the primary gaming purpose of your new PC) get a 4GB card. If you simply cannot go over $300:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487074
$296.99 with the promo code. It would run a heavily modded Skyrim with ease. If you can find another $40-$50, get a GTX 970.

As far as Nvidia and Zotac goes - Nvidia makes the chip, Zotac makes the card using that chip. So basically, an MSI GTX 970, Zotac GTX 970 or EVGA GTX 970 are all "Nvidia" cards since they use the same Nvidia manufactured chip. Just the brand of the video card manufacturer is different.

Get the GTX 970 if you could find one in stock.

Get a GTX 770 if you can't find a 970.

But I would get an R9 290 if you're willing to ditch nvidia. This card will outperform the 770 at a lower cost.

and if you can't find a gtx 970 in stock, i'd still wait and get that one anyway. with the power efficieny. direct x 12 features, global illumination and other features. i'd still wait and get it anyway. it'll definitly last you quite a few years.

Okay this is how it works. There are two gpu manufacturers: AMD and Nvidia

Nvidia and AMD gives sub vendors such as MSI, ASUS, Zotac, EVGA, Gigabyte etc their gpu chip blueprint/ architecture. The subvendors, in this case EVGA and Zotac, get the gpu blueprints/schematic/architecture and manufacture it. They put the card together and add they're own cooling unit to it.

In conclusion, subvendors such as EVGA, MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte are the ones that assembe it. They may not look the same, but they are all using the same GPU chip.

In your case, EVGA and Zotac are both using the same GTX 970 gpu chip. But the subvendors make different PCBs and add their own cooling unit. Sometimes, they may even overclock the chip. But at the end of the day, they are both GTX 970s.

Is the msi gtx 970 good. I cant find any of these for sale in stock and i when i do on amazon there 380.00. I plan on buying a gpu in a week or two to start building.

Now i can find the zotac 970 in stock for 320. How is the quality of the zotac. Also an evga 770 is the same price at 320?
