I've tried updating drivers, resetting the wireless adapter, restarted it to get a new IP address, and manually connecting to the wireless network, but it tells me that I cannot connect. I have also tried disconnecting a device in case it was a capacity issue, but the laptop still won't connect. When I check the discovered networks list, it shows my network. When I try to log into it, however, it tells me that I cannot connect.

Solution
some newer systems will refuse to connect to wep security (due to "certificate" and/or too weak of a security). If your router is set to wep, try changing to at least wpa or wpa2 aes. If you do change the type of encryption it would be best to rename the network or you will have to change the type of security in each device or force to forget and then retry connection. Changing the name just makes it easier to click, get the prompt for password, enter and done.

I do not know if this will help but have seen this issue more promenently over the past couple of years

My laptop was working fine on my home wifi, until last week. It had trouble finding it, then it was invisible. Before that my fried had also those problems when he came with his laptop and mobile. I tried evertything suggested on internet. Then i called my internet provider and they sent IT guy (they gave me wifi routher). He could connect with his two smartphones. He was working about 50 min and was puzzled why won't work and was blaming my laptop (HP Pavilion). I called my friend to come, that also had problem connecting on my wifi and he coulnd't connect also and showed IT guy. Then he switched wifi router with new one. First time i could connect and my friend too, then i turnd off/on my connection on laptop, problem came back (also to my friend too). After that IT guy, turnd off password for wifi and it worked as charm. At the end he figured out that problem was with auto and dynamic ip addres (auto was using also dynamic) in wifi router settings (192.168.0.1). He then switched to static ip addres and it works well.
