New GPU, but still having performance issues

Hello everyone,

This week i bought a r7 260x 2 gig for my pc. My system is about 4 years old.
I play some games like COH2 and Rome 2 total war. I had to play these games on minimum specs with my old GPU. Which was an ati 5770 1 gb

When I installed my new GPU i dont realy notice a big improvement of the performances in games.
Still having long (too long) loading times.
Poor fps and overal it just feels like my pc is running in the red.

My question is:

What unit is bottlenecking me? is it the RAM or is the new GPU I bought just not strong enough.
The most irritating issue is the long loading time and the slow responding time when for instance, minimizing while in game.

My specs are:
Mobo:Asus M4A79XTD EVO
4 gb ddr 3 1333 ram
AMD Phenom II X4 955e @ 3500 MHz
550w PSU
24 inch monitor 1920x1080

I would appreciate if some of you would be so kind to give me some advice.

Thank you

A GPU won't really do anything for load times. Nor will it help with the minimizing issue.

Those are HDD and CPU related.

Both COH and Rome 2 are CPU bound.

Here you can see that even a 3 generation old i5 will almost double your performance.

your older CPU is holding you back in these games. Those are benchmarks for both games for the CPU. It also does not help that those games BOTH strongly prefer intel over AMD.

The examples you put up is CPU limited with the Titan but a quad @ 3.5Ghz with mediocre 260X card should be GPU limited. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7481/the-amd-radeon-r9-290-review/10

That would be true if all quads @3.5Ghz meant the same performance....
Are you trying to tell us that the Intel Core i7-4960X @ 4.2GHz (what they used with the tests in your link) is going to perform the same as the AMD Phenom II x4 955e.... hardly. He IS CPU limited - not all quads are the same. an intel quad will far out perform an AMD quad processor in gaming.

Take a look at this...

and
http://gamegpu.ru/images/stories/Test_GPU/strategy/Company%20of%20Heroes%202-2/test/coh%20proz.png

the 955 is getting about HALF the FPS of the intel i5.

I have looked at that and by using a Titan it becomes CPU limited, did you take a look at the Anandtech link where it is GPU limited?

I guess you don't understand what the CPU limited graph is showing... So pretty much any GPU he uses he will not see frame rates higher than about 30 due to his CPU...

If he wants to get better performance in these 2 games it seems he will have to upgrade both this CPU and GPU again.

Look at the total picture the card closest to his 260X HD6870 only scores 20fps avg! http://www.overclock.net/t/1426315/gamegpu-total-war-rome-ii-benchmarked that is GPU limit. By using the Titan they force CPU limit with the 955BE at 28fps avg.
All I am saying is he is GPU limited as well.

Your links do not have his GPU in there.. but from them i could guess his GPU would get around 30-35 fps at the settings they used... If he used low settings he could get upwards of 40-50 FPS. IF he had a better CPU. As it is now lowering his settings will net no frame rate gain due to his CPU limiting him to right around 30 fps.

That is not at lowest settings though... but yes i agree.... but if he lowered settings he could get better FPS than his CPU allows currently... He needs a system overhaul.

Thanks for all your replies.

My intention was to get a big boost for my computer. This gfx seemed like a good budget card to get some improvement in fps and also get rid of these hang ups and too long loading screens in games.

I just tried my GPU in game. (COH2)
Hardly playable, no real difference between my old gfx. Maybe a bit better but not what i was hoping for.

I minimized when in mid game. I took about 2 min before the computer was minimized and responding again, but i saw that in windows taskmanager, under performances, 3.70 gig of memory was being used. in cache 260 mb available 280mb and free memory was 0-40 mb

Does this mean that the system has just enough memory? Or does it mean it is going over its limit.

thanks
