I just upgraded my cpu to an Intel i7 4709k from an i5 cpu and found that my fps was significantly lower in games. I checked task manager as well as CPU-Z and they both claim to only be running only 2 cores. I checked the config and went through the advanced options to raise it, as well as seeing if my BIOS was blocking any of the cores, but no dice.

What am I missing?

Figured it out. For whatever reason, msconfig was locking option out of the drop down, preventing me from selecting anything higher than four processors. All I had to do in advanced options was uncheck the box, restart, and then it would allow me to recheck the box and select 8 from the drop down. After i restarted again it is reading all 4 cores and 8 logical processors.

Msconfig is the operating system's base settings. In the bottom search bar, type in msconfig or system configuation. Open the app, go to boot, and then advanced options. For my issue specifically, Windows was preventing my cpu from running more than two cores. With the fix above, I was able to eliminate that restriction and utilize all four cores. Hope this helps.

i found that btw. but it turns out my problem was diffrent.

i have 1 socket 4 cores and 8 logic processors. but because of intell HT my OS handles handles the 4 cores and 4 threads as the 8 logical processors. basicly the one core that my keyboard and my taskmanager display. is the total usage.

so yes it's only showing 1 core. but it's supposed to be that way.
you can fix it by turning of intell HT (intell hyperthreading) but then hyperthreading won't work. and you will just have a quadcore. without the extra threads.
this seems to be a common problem with i7's (more then 4 cores)

cpu-z http://prntscr.com/ao8j22
taskmanager set to logic processors. http://prntscr.com/ao8jn1
taskmanager default (set to total usage) http://prntscr.com/ao8jvh
mine was working fine. i was just confused
