When I turn on laptop it comes to the Gateway screen then to a black screen with the cursor at top left corner. F8 is not working - whether pressing intermittently or holding down so I can't get to safe mode. F2 was working ( set up menu ). But it has now quit working. When holding down F2 or F8 it just starts beeping. Where do I go from here?
Daughter downloaded a file program to try to open a video file that wouldn't run with Windows Media. That's when the problem started.

Hello... Placing/BOOTing your Gateway/Windows Disk WILL give you workable options... But please relax and Don't be placing blame on her yet... it is quite common to have HD failures in laptops... AND download problem files... B )
There are NO Internet Police and people seem to have nothing better to do... than too try and Hurt others.

Thanks I try that and see if I can get anywhere with this.

The laptop came preinstalled with Windows7 / went to Gateway website and they had a backdoor to system restore. Alt F10 while starting up. That worked and went to Restore w/ a C drive backup for files. Seemed to work fine until it got to the end of it (hours later) and said Windows could not be installed on this hard drive.
Guess this hard drive is a goner.

Went back in to the recovery backdoor and decided to recover to factory settings which wiped out all my files in C:drive. It is stalling during the recovery when installing MS Office. I have also tried running in safe mode with no luck. Any suggestions?
