Built a PC, video output doesn't work through HDMI

I'm built a PC a few hours ago and assumed I didn't have the correct DVI cable to connect my GPU up to my monitor (which I don't) so I used HDMI. I dunno what's happening. Tomorrow I'll go out to BestBuy and buy a Dual Link DVI-D, but I'm confused as to why HDMI doesn't work as a video output right now. Any help? (first build BTW yay)

Did you select HDMI input on your display device? Are you sure your PC is running fine and not failing to boot?

Ensure there is no damage on the HDMI port on the monitor/card and that the cable is firmly attached.

When you say HDMI:
Are you using a HDMI output on your graphics card?
Are you using a HDMI input on your monitor?
Are you using any adapters?
Is the HDMI input selected on the monitor?
What resolution are you running?
Has the computer output video at all to any device?
Has the monitor displayed video at all?
