Unsure if my internal media drive is failing, or i just need a format (SMART readings, seatools for DOS error detection).

Currently, the 2 values that are coming up problematic, currently pending sector count and uncorrectable sector count, show a value of 8, Seatools for DOS said i had 1 error in an advanced test, and said it fixed it, but in a quick test it said it failed again, it was in the same location.

Strangly enough though, it is not saying i have bad sectors, but errors, my question is what are my options and is my hard drive dying?

Should i do a full format(i've heard that occasionally a format is all that is required to fix said issues)?

Here is an image of my SMART reading in Crystaldisk info:

Any help is much appreciated

Yes it has persisted, strangely though i have not had any performance issues, honestly if i had not done a routine SMART test i wouldn't have even known about this.

Honestly if you have your information backed up and not really needing that drive at the moment or for the next hour or so then I don't see any problem formatting it. Although I would try to reconnect the your hard drive just in case its something minor for going major.

Well the main problem by doing so is that i am unsure the proper form of a format to take with this as i am unsure as to what form of a format to take, quick format obviously wouldn't do much but i am unsure if i should do a full format or a zero-fill format, which takes much longer.

What that is basically telling you is that the drive has run out of extra sectors to exchange for bad sectors on the media. Basically the media of the drive is starting to go bad. If your drive is still under warranty of which it might be considering the size I would contact seagate to have them get you new/refurbished drive.

Ouch i see, well i am unsure if the drive is still under warranty but i was prepared for this possibility anyway, so thank you for your assistance.

That said, hopefully the drive lasts until black friday/cyber monday, i was planning on getting another hard disk anyway, so even if i am out of warranty at least i will be able to replace it soon.

Check your warranty here -> http://support.seagate.com/customer/en-US/warranty_validation.jsp
You should be able to get a new/refurb drive in a couple of weeks from them if it is, at the cost of shipping. I've never personally dealt with Seagate with drive warranties. I have dealt with Western Digital but that is due to only owning a few Seagates and a lot of Western Digital drives.

Thank you for that link as well, it appears my HDD is barely within the warranty period (expires at the end of nov), but the warranty is still in effect, so there is that.

Now to just get that error fail code out of seatools.

Well right now i'm just trying to figure out if it is considered a defect legitimate enough to apply for warranty service or not, as i've pretty much come to the conclusion that no matter what, the drive is going to probably die soon.

If you are unsure just run Seatools in windows and have it run its tests on the drive. If Seagates tools says there is a SMART Error that has nothing to do with temps then yea it can go back. At least according to seagate.

The SMART reading in seatools passed, however after doing a fix test (long or short), seatools notices errors and suggests using seatools for dos for higher level of fixing trials, when i ran seatools for dos it suggested i contact seagate for a replacement if it was still under warranty so yeah, gonna do a surface read/write to determine if it truly is just to be sure and to rule out any possible returns of the drive before i apply for the warranty anyway.

Just let them know pretty much everything you have done and the results of the tests if you do apply for a warranty replacement. Keeps them from asking you stupid questions :)

Exactly why i'm doing it this way, read/write and all, not giving them any reason to doubt it.
