I bought the WD My Book a while back and used it for my Mac. I was never able to use it for my PC for whatever reason, even though it is for both. Yesterday I hooked it up to my Mac to upload some pictures to the Walmart site to make a photo album. When I checked a while later, the Mach showed a sign it needed to be shut off. I shut if off and now I have a folder with a question mark, which eman the Mac can't find the start up. I tired my My Book and it doesn't work either. It has light and makes a humming sound, but it looks like all the data is gone. How can it both be erase by just a simple upload to a webpage? I don.t have a start up disc.....the Mac is 12 years old but I need the data on the My Book....Help please.

Hey there, Doro!

I'm sorry to hear about your issue with WD My Book! :(
It seems like the format can be read only on a Mac computer. In order to use it in both PC and Mac, you need to re-format it in FAT32.
Here's a link how to do it in Windows/OS X: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/291
I found a thread from WD's community that might help you figure out how to get your data back:

If it doesn't help, I'd suggest to contact one of our data recovery partners to help you retrieve your files from the My Book:

Hope this helps. Keep me posted!
