Which should I go for: 760, 770, 780, 970 or 980?

Am looking to get a high-end gaming PC . I want to be able to play all titles on at least High at 1080p. I am only playing on a single 24" 1080p monitor so more than 2GB of VRAM is unneeded

Solution

Similar in performance but the 970 has the win in power draw and efficiency http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_970_SC_ACX_Cooler/25.html
Do not know where the last poster got the 40% from but that is wrong!

Though I have been told the 900 series is just the same as the 700 except it is way more efficient so it doesn't get hot as fast

If you have the budget for any of those cards, the GTX980 is absolutely the best. If you can find one for sale.

But... The GTX970 is really the sweet spot for what you want to do.

The other cards are older gen and more power hungry. GTX780 or GTX780ti could be good and will do the job if you are shopping the used market.

I have the budget for any card I want but at the same time I don't wanna buy a 980 if it's more power than I'll even use

It is more power since the 970 will handle it on highest.

So for single monitor 1080p gaming it's the 970 and anything above that it's the 980?

I stated before I was told the 970 is just a 770 revamped to be more efficient, I heard that in a GTX 980 review by the YouTuber Tech of Tomorrow.

The GTX970 and GTX980 are the latest Maxwell architecture. They have some improvements in the image quality area too. I would not get anything less.
The $200 extra for a GTX980 is not usually considered as worth it from a performance point of view.
But, worth is something only YOU can determine.
That $200 can buy you a nice SSD which is definitely worth it.

You seem to have the budget.
FWIW
I have never regretted paying more for something better, but have often regrettedd buying less.
If the extra $200 is not that important to you, go ahead and buy the GTX980.
If you don't, you will forever wonder if you should have.

The 970 is a bit faster than the 780 while consuming less power. It also has 4GB VRAM vs. 3 w/ the 780 or 2GB with the standard 770. The 970 would be overkill for 1080P today, but if you plan on using this card for awhile, it would be my choice. Another plus is the new DSR feature known as Dynamic Super Resolution. Since your gaming on 1080P, and the 970 is way more power than that resolution uses. You can enable this feature to render games at 4k, then scale them back down to 1080P. By doing this, the image quality should be considerably better.

It is my understanding that shader and rop units work differently on Maxwell and are not directly comparable.
Maxwell does more with fewer such units .
The bottom line is to ignore specs and look at performance.

I was replying to the claim that the 970 was just a newer version of the 770! Performance had already been handled!

From post above "Though I have been told the 900 series is just the same as the 700 except it is way more efficient so it doesn't get hot as fast"

I am planning on using whichever GPU I get for a few years until the time comes that whatever GPU I get is no longer up to the task

if i were you i would just get the 970 because this card will be great for another 2-3 years

Let's just say the 970 will run anything I want on High or above at 60FPS until October 2016. How long then would the 980 run things on that same setting?

okay lets put it this way the 970 will run the games till oct 2016 at ultra and all with at least 55-65fps while the 980 will run them at 60-80fps the thing about the 970 and 980 is the price diffrence like the 980 is double the price of the 970 and it only gives you 20% more preformance which is not alot

What are the rest of the proposed specs?
In particular the cpu.
What type of games?
Some are single threaded and cpu bound. Others are graphics limited.
For example bf3/4 needs graphics in single player, it needs cpu in multiplayer.
Regardless, a GTX970 will not disappoint with any single monitor short of a 4k monitor.

Hey, what about the 970 vs the 290X?
