Not sure about the current generation console controllers, but XBox 360 and PS3 controllers are essentially plug and play (assuming they are USB ones). Wireless ones will need a wireless adapter, and that's where it gets tricky. A lot of off-brand and knockoff receivers don't work correctly, either not recognizing your controller or not installing the appropriate drivers. Personally, I use XBox 360 controllers (both wired and wireless, with an official Microsoft wireless receiver) as I find them to fit best in my hands and they are comfortable to use across a wide variety of games.
