Lag in Rome total war 1 on the lowest setting for everything

So i started a 20000 man battle in Rome total war and as soon as the fighting began the whole thing lagged. This is disappointing because i expected my computer which is of upper quality build to have better performance when all game settings are off or on the lowest possible. Any suggestions other than reducing the number of people per fight.

i7 4770k
Gtx 780 superoverclocked 3gb
16 gbs corsair vengence ram
Asus Z87 Pro
128 Gb Samsung evo drive SSD

Huh, I know R:TW (the first one) can lag even on higher end CPUs, but last time I played, my 2600k chugged through with barely any issues. A 20k man battle should be trivial for a 4770k.

Check the obvious culprit first: Are temps within acceptable ranges? Might be some throttling going on.
