I installed windows 8 and now just getting black screen

I upgraded my dell inspiron 15R SE 7520 from windows 7 to windows 8.1..
my screen has been broken for a while before the upgrade and both hdmi and vga worked and now when I have the cord plugged in my computer wont boot at all
all it shows is a black screen... my moniter and my tv both recognizes my laptop but its just a black screen.. again this only happened after I installed windows 8.1

any help would be greatfully appreciated :(

did you press several times with the Fn key and like the F4 or F6 or whatever it is on your keyboard? I would hold down the Fn key and then each time press and release the F4 or F6 key (or whatever it is on your keyboard). Each press of the F4 or 6 (or whatever) toggles to the next screen mode.
