Alright so I made an account here so I could get some advice on this build. This will be my first PC build if I manage to see it through to the end. I have been doing research on components and things like that for the past few days. Here is the build:

CPU: intel i7 4790 (not k) 3.6ghz LGA 1150 $310
Motherboard: ASUS maximus vi hero z87 OR z97 $180 or $210
GPU: ASUS strix gtx970 4gb $350
RAM: G.Skill ripjaws x 16gb (8gbx2) 240-pin ddr3 1866 $166
HD: WD blue 3.5" 1tb 7200 RPM SATA 6gb/s $55
SSD: Samsung 840 pro 2.5" 256gb SATAIII $160
PSU: Seasonic X series X650 gold $130
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 black pearl ATX mid tower case $100
CPU fan: CM Hyper 212 evo $35
Case fans: I might add one Noctua NF-A14 140mm fan to one of the sides of the case $29
Monitor: ASUS VG248QE Black 24" 144Hz HDMI $270
Optical drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner $20

All of these components prices are taken from newegg.

I chose a lot of expensive components as I have just recently been able to afford it :). Although money isn't a huge issue, if there are any ways to lower the overall price of the build without sacrificing too much then I will go for it. This will be a PC for mainly gaming, but also for some 3D modeling for engineering/autodesk programs. Should I go with a full tower or stick with a mid tower? Do I even need a CPU fan? Also Windows 7 or Windows 8.1?

Get Z97 mobo for that CPU

A Corsair 230T would fit that stuff. Or something bigger eg CM HAF XM.

The evo gets the better write ups.

Jut use the fans that come with the case.

Any $20 optical Drive would be fine.

I'd change the i7 to an i5 4690k for gaming. Bit cheaper.

Your PSU will be OK. But seeing as you haven't put prices on items, its a bit hard to say.

Hmmm, must've overlooked that. Do you have any recommendations for a similar mobo without the oc aspect? I assume it would save me some money to go for the regular mobo.

I read that the i7 handles 3D modeling software better than the i5, so I think I will stick with the i7 for now. Also, I just edited in the prices of the components if you want to take a look. Thanks.
