Not quite. A sound card will also provide virtual surround. Virtual surround is where you have two speakers, but it sounds like you have a bunch placed around your head due to software. True surround means actually having multiple speakers around your head, which doesn't make much sense for a headset. As for which headset to pick, avoid Tritton. They are uncomfortable, fragile, and have bad sound quality. The Corsair H2100/2100 and Steelseries Siberia V3 are probably the best gaming headsets with surround available right now. They're very comfortable, have good sound quality, and don't break easily.

Ok, first off, the Tritton Warhead headset is designed for the Xbox 360. I know it's possible to connect it to PC somehow, but I'm just putting that out there. Second, these are virtual 7.1 headsets. I am pretty sure that the surround sound is created by the headset, and you don't actually need a sound card to power it. They are powered by Dolby Digital surround sound which can simulate the virtual reality of true 7.1, without being actual 7.1

Hope this doesn't sound too confusing. :D
