File explorer not working

I have windows 8.1
For whatever reason, I cannot open the filebrowser from the icon on the task bar..and when I open it from start, it randomly closes.

You may have installed something thats added itself to the context menu. And its stuffed it up

Which can happen

If ccleaner is installed run it go to tools/startup context menu. Disable whats here.

Then see if it opens

A. What's the context menu? and B. How did I "install" something without knowing what a context menu is?

Its when you right mouse on a file. it gives you the option to open it with something
