Hi,

So, I've just upgraded to a 1440p monitor and am trying to squeeze the last bit of juice out of my GPU before I upgrade next year.

However, for some reason, my overclock never seems to apply. I've tried overclocking in both Catalyst Control Center and MSI Afterburner, but no joy. I can remember a time when it used to work, but now it seems to just stay at stock 24/7.

I'm running 14.9 Drivers and version 400 of MSI Afterburner. I've tried reinstalling both but have had no luck. Here are some screenshots to demonstrate what I mean:

Here is MSI Afterburner and my settings:

Now, here is an overview of all of my graphics tools while running a GPUZ render test. As you can see, GPUZ states a clock speed of 1100MHz and memory clock of 1475MHz, however CCC and HWiNFO64 show stock settings as the settings that are actually running. You can also see that Graphics Overdrive is disabled in CCC.

What on Earth is going on? Why won't my GPU Overclock apply? :(

Solution
When overclocking you need to use just one program.
When you open another program it will set the clocks to its settings.
If you are overclocking with Afterburner and open AMD overdrive, AMD overdrive will apply its settings upon opening, negating the Afterburner settings.
Pick one program for overclocking and monitoring and stick with it.
MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision-X for overclocking and GPU-Z for monitoring or second opinion on speeds. But do not enable the overclocking tab on GPU-Z unless you want it to be the default overclocking tool.
Also you need to set your software to start with windows and apply overclocking on start up.

Was just about to post back on this issue. I've played around and did a complete removal of every graphics related component on my entire system. I uninstalled my drivers, uninstalled Trixx, Afterburner, Catalyst Control Centre and also RTSS.

I reinstalled just the drivers and Afterburner and the problem was STILL there. Another issue I noticed was my idle clock sat at 501MHz as opposed to the 300 I'm used to.

I dug deep and found an old setup file of the 14.7 RC drivers and installed as a last shot following a Display Driver Uninstaller run on the 14.9 package. This has fixed the problem and it is finally working with the settings I give in Afterburner.

Anyone reading this, I'd be wary of 14.9 drivers on 7XXX series cards.

Thanks for your help buddy.

why do you you expect ccc to cooperate since you have overdrive disabled? you are overclocking through msi afterburner! anyway i would trust gpuz. while gaming in gpuz sensor tab, if gpu core clock hits 1100mhz / memory 1475mhz then it is under overclock! i overclock through ccc overdrive and it works just fine! you will only need to re config overclocking only if you change to newer version of ccc! i never use beta drivers. currentlu using 14.9

Okay so I thought I'd resolved the issue earlier by reinstalling 14.7 drivers. This fixed the problem for a while and everything was running smooth. HWiNFO was showing an OC of 1100 MHz in game and everything was fine and dandy. However, it's now gone back to how it was before. Idle clock is 501MHz and the overclock on load won't go over 1000MHz. Something is definitely not right here. Any more suggestions?

I'm running CCC with overdrive disabled as I am overclocking with Afterburner. I've tried using Catalyst to overclock and it does the same thing. Very strange.

Yes I have indeed selected that option as you can see in the screenshot.

I have narrowed it down and noticed something strange. Whenever Chrome is running with some form of Flash content ongoing (in my case, Battlefield 4 Battlelog with its background animation), the clock gets stuck to 501MHz when idle and does not move above 1000MHz when overclocked. If I close Chrome, the issue disappears. Very strange.

what? i though that was happening during gaming! dont worry about that as it is just a flash player bug! core clock will always max out at stock speed! it happens to me too!

Almost on the right lines! :D Yes, quite so. It happens when Chrome is open. But, UNTIL Chrome is closed the clock simply will not move above 1000MHz back to my overclock of 1100MHz. It's almost as if the clock speed is locked while Chrome is open.

If I have Chrome open while in a game of Battlefield or another game, the clock stays at 1000MHz. If I alt tab, close Chrome, reapply my overclock then it sticks until the next time I open Chrome. I don't think it's a problem my end :(

BINGO! You're quite right. You gave me an idea with this statement! I just disabled Hardware Acceleration in Chrome and the bug is gone! Woo! Thanks so much man haha now I can game and use Chrome at the same time without losing my overclock ^_^
