I wanted to do a video editing and gaming PC around $500 and the above is just that. However, I wanted to check with the forums and make sure that everything is compatible. My mobo is an ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0, and PCPartPicker says that the motherboard may need a BIOS update to use the FX-8320. Is this true, though? As well, do I need an aftermarket cooler? I didn't plan on overclocking but I've heard that these 8-core monsters produce a lot of heat and noise on the stock cooler. If I do need one, do you think a Hyper 212 Evo would work? Thanks.

Solution
Yes depending on the BIOS version the board ships with you might need to update it Asus has a good way of doing this Easy Flash 2 if needed.
I would up the power supply a bit that model of the EVGA is not very good, and upping it would allow for a better video card in the future.
For the video editing keep the FX 8320!

if you're only using the 750ti then dont use an 8320, go to an 6300 or maybe even a 4 core, 750ti is not fast enouh to be bottlenecked by cheaper FX series procesors. I would recommend a 6300 for any build under 1k, and for you at only 500 just go with a 4 core

PCPartPicker has already given you the compatible parts, but about the CPU i think you should get an aftermarket cooler because AMD processors are known as they produce a lot of heat and Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO is a perfect choice from the price and the quality

This is another option: Good budget-friendly motherboard and psu; stronger gpu; lower tdp cpu; 2x4GB RAM:

Is this PSU any good? It's not 80+ and I don't trust that low price tag.

This is a regular tier 3 budget $45 psu. Its good enough for a budget no-overclocking build like that and it is just $20 @newegg right now.

There are better PSUs in $40-$50 range for sure. For instance:
