Speaker Problems with Realtek HD Audio on Windows 8.1

I have an ASUS Q550LF-BSI7T21 laptop with Realtek HD Audio driver version 6.0.1.7278, running on 64-bit Windows 8.1.

I am experiencing an issue with the built-in speakers, which do not initialize/turn on immediately when multimedia begins playing. Usually the speakers can only be prompted to begin playing by raising the volume over a high threshold, or by prompting a Windows sound to play - Windows sounds seem to always turn the speakers on, while other sounds (audio from music, videos, etc.) do not. Once the speakers have "turned on," they work normally for a while, but the problem returns after gaps between usage, as if the audio card is being turned off from inactivity and has trouble starting up again.

The speakers also make a popping sound when turning on and off - they will pop when the playback finally kicks in (often by manually playing a Windows sound, such as by modifying the System Sounds volume), and will pop again when the application that was playing audio is closed (ie. playback ends). Headphones work fine.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers several times, both from ASUS and Realtek, with no improvement. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

There are no power options available for the audio card or speaker as far as I can tell.

I too am having this exact same problem and have yet to find a solution. Looking in the device manager at any audio related devices shows no power options. Raising the volume seems to be the only working solution so far. Will keep looking.
