The higher the model number the faster it is.

The x version will be a little bit faster for all models.

You have to be specific about the cards you are looking at. They are both R9 280 so they are going to perform similarly. Does one have a better cooler? Factory overclock? Cheaper? Without specifying what two cards you are looking at the question isn't answerable.

From what I heard, Sapphire cards have better cooling. I have an MSI Radeon R9 270X TWIN FROZR, so I wouldn't be able to tell you from actually using one, but I've heard from other threads you should choose Sapphire.

The core clock on the MSI R9 280 is 933MHz and the core clock on the Sapphire R9 280 is 850MHz
