Exiting Big Games Lags the freak out of my internet

Hello, I have a bit of an issue. It all started with Skyrim, when i would start the game play for a little bit, once i would exit it would lag the nut sack out of my internet for like 10m. We tested Skype and there was a 7 sec delay on when i would say something and when my friend would receive it. Also these games are Steam ran.

Try going into the Steam settings and on the Friends tab uncheck all the boxes and then on the In-Game tab uncheck the Enable Steam Overlay.
Not sure if Skyrim does this but I know its possible in Everquest2 to have the game download areas as you goto them instead of having the entire game installed on the computer. I know that slows things down and maybe Steam was still downloading stuff after you exited the game.
