GPU + Drivers Causing Video Player Issues?

Hello, so I already opened a thread about this discussion on another part of the forum, but no one seems to know about it in the slightest. In the meanwhile, I've come to the conclusion/theory that it's my GPU and the drivers that go along with it. Here's the previous thread for reference:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2354872/video-compressed-causing-artifacts.html

Here's my specs:

Model: Asus R510-DP
Motherboard Model: X550DP
CPU: AMD A10 5750M APU
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8670M 2GB(it's the on-board APU graphics with an HD 8650G card)
OS: Windows 8.1 Retail
HDD: WD Black 2 SSHD 120GB + 1TB
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600 MHZ
Resolution: 1920X1080

To give a little insight, this is an OEM machine obviously since it's a laptop and it's from Asus, however I was having problems with Windows 8.1 and the hard disks, the first one I believe had a bad sector and the second one was just extremely slow. On top of that Windows 8.1 kept getting corrupt through updates for some reason, so I decided instead of sending it in again, I bought a WD Black2 SSHD(which is FANTASTIC) and a retail copy of Windows 8.1. After installing everything, it is all perfect except for one thing, my GPU drivers stopped showing up after a particular update. After investigating, I found that there had been an update with Windows 8.1 which puts a new folder "WU_CCC2" under your programs folders. After running this and letting it uninstall/reinstall Catalyst, they finally started showing up and working. However, when I run video players such as VLC or Windows Media Player to watch videos I end up with artifacts and compression(at least that's what I believe it is). Here is a picture to help show what's going on:

After updating to CCC2 is only when I noticed the problem, so I tried to do a full uninstall of everything AMD related and reinstall the older drivers, no dice. The drivers do not even get past the installation because it freezes at a certain point in the installation. I'm at a loss here, everything is fine except for my videos which I use for school and studying purposes. I've even tried to see if movies had the effect and sure enough they do. They do not get the massive grey effect in the picture displayed above, however the video does get "blocky", kind of like being pixelated but on a bigger and more noticeable scale than an individual pixel.

On a side note, I did attempt to play the same videos on my desktop which is also AMD/Radeon with the latest drivers, however the videos look just fine and have no problems whatsoever. So that being said, I think the culprit is this new update for the Catalyst Control Center, but I'd prefer to get some feedback in case I'm wrong.

Thanks in advance for any and all help, it is most definitely appreciated!

Solution
Do you have the video you are watching set to utilize the onboard graphics or the GPU? within the control panel for AMD it should have a tab for you to choose which GPU is uses.
The best way to fix this problem is to download the latest drivers - but don't install them yet. Go into device manager and disable the current GPU, and then re-enable it. Cancel out of the software install....then install the new drivers. I have several computers that have major issues with the drivers that Windows wants to install and the drivers that should be for the GPU - this includes both NVIDIA and AMD chipsets....

Okay I will give this a try, however I'd like to know something before I do this, my system is an APU+GPU dual graphics set up, it uses the Crossfire technology with an integrated and dedicated graphics unit so when I see the list of devices it shows two things: AMD Radeon HD 8600M, then AMD Radeon HD 8650G+ 8600M Dual Graphics. Which one do you recommend that I disable? Also, will this cause my display to stop working?

Well I did what you said and it worked for installing the drivers downloaded from the website, however I am still getting these artifacts in the video. I'm wondering if it is my GPU that's having an issue and I need to send it into Asus, but I'd rather wait and see if anyone can solve this issue first.

I do have an option for that, however I cannot turn off the APU graphics, only the dedicated GPU graphics, and in doing so it did not change anything. I went into the device manager and turned off both graphics processors and still ended up with the same results. One thing I did try though was to turn off the APU graphics and just run the dedicated GPU graphics, I'm not sure if that's what actually happened but when I did disable what I thought was the APU graphics the issue stopped occurring...for a short period of time. Then I got a warning saying the graphics drivers were not working properly and then I enabled it again to prevent any potential damage from occurring. I'm quite confused as to what is causing this, after seeing what I saw I want to say that it's the APU graphics, but I'm not an expert so I can't say for sure.

Have you updated all of your drivers from ASUS's website (or the manufacturer's website where they have newer drivers? There could be any number of drivers that Windows has replaced that could be creating this problem....or it could be a bad video card (either APU or onboard graphics)....

I have all of my drivers updated from the ASUS website EXCEPT the AMD graphics drivers provided on the ASUS website, that being said I could uninstall everything and try the much older drivers to see if that works but I highly doubt it. I will try this and possibly the ASUS Splendid Video program under utilities but I doubt that will solve my problems either. This is all starting to point towards a bad graphics card...I'll go ahead and run the ASUS PC Diagnoser to see if anything pops up too. Regardless it's starting to look like I might need to send it in for servicing AGAIN -.-

So after extensive testing and contacting Asus for support, I will in fact have to send it in for an RMA. The graphics card is without a doubt artifacting, I had quite a few theories as to why it was doing this, I uninstalled/reinstalled the current drivers, previous version drivers and the OEM drivers from the Asus support site and none of them worked. I tried the video files on my desktop thinking it might be the bit-rate of the files themselves, however they ran smoothly without any issues. I even went as far as to wipe my hard drive, reinstall Windows 8.1 again and then do the same with the old 750GB HDD that came with the laptop, still produced the same results even without the display drivers installed. It is very apparent that the GPU or the APU, or even both have an issue. It really is not a good year for me technologically speaking...
