When it comes to GPUs, what is the cheaper route? Two good graphics cards in SLI or one good high performance card?
What's your suggestion, I'm going to be doing gaming, and running 3, maybe 4 monitors at most. I don't really want to do and overkill. I will be using the i5 4690 cpu
Thank you.

I would recommend getting a GTX 980 with decent cooling on it and then overclock it a bit. Doubling up cards, doesn't necessarily mean doubling up on performance. Also depending on what you're doing, like say gaming, some games might have poor SLI optimization.
well, i think it is hard to do an overkill for a 3 monitor setup, unless money is not an issue.
sli's are faster, 2 cards. more than that and the increase is not really that good.
but based on some of my friends, going single gpu is still less problematic than using more than one.

make sure you have enough vram though

While normally i would fully agree with your reasoning, the problem is between the GTX980 and 970 is that the GTX980 is ~12% faster but costs ~70% more.

So even if the second card only scales 50%, its worth the money by FAR.
